Current West Virginia flag
West Virginia's current flag is yet another seal on a bedsheet, though its white field and blue border carry significant meaning. The border represents the state's decision to join the Union and break away from the Confederacy, making it worth retaining.
Design and symbolism
My redesign retains the white field and blue border but replaces the central seal with seven rhododendron flowers, the state flower.
Choosing the Union
The blue border is retained as a reference to West Virginia's decision to join the Union and break away from the Confederacy.
The rhododendron
The seven flowers represent the rhododendron, West Virginia's state flower.
The 35th state
Each rhododendron has five petals, giving seven flowers a total of 35 petals to represent West Virginia's admission as the 35th state.
