Current Tennessee flag
The existing Tennessee flag is actually great, vexilogically speaking. But it's just the standard generic "Red, White and Blue". Additionally, I feel like there's a bit of a sneaky Confederate reference hiding with the fimbriations dividing the red and blue, especially combining it with stars.
Design and symbolism
By changing the red to orange we remove connection to the Confederate color scheme, and get a distinct and attractive local flag.
Orange
From the daisies to the University of Tennessee to the sunsets in the Smoky Mountains, orange has long been the colour associated with Tennessee.
Flag evolution
The current flag is distinctive and unique and represents Tennessee. Evolving the current flag, rather than replacing it, keeps that association alive.
