Annoyingly, North Dakota possesses a genuine coat of arms that could even look good as a seal.om a bedsheet. but no, North Dakota's current flag is merely generic US symbolism.
Design and symbolism
I considered using a plain banner of arms, but the very specific arrowhead-shaped shield is central to its significance and would be lost in a plain rectangular translation. Adding an arrowhead symbol to the banner was another option, but then it would no longer be an accurate representation of the coat of arms. My solution is to feature the shield of the coat of arms atop a green and black bicolor.
The coat of arms
The arrowhead-shaped shield is taken directly from North Dakota's coat of arms, preserving its distinctive shape and symbolism while giving it a more prominent place on the flag.
Green and gold
The green and gold colors of the state coat of arms represent North Dakota's agricultural landscape, specifically ripening grain and abundant grazing areas.
The soil and its wealth
The black in the bicolor represents the state's fertile soil and its mineral wealth, including the oil that has become an important part of North Dakota's economy.
