Current Massachusetts flag
Massachusetts has a generic seal-on-a-bedsheet design, on white no less. The seal also contains symbols with some fairly problematic historical associations, making it a poor choice for a modern state flag.
Design and symbolism
My design for Massachusetts features a vertical series of stripes at the hoist: green, white, cranberry, white, blue, and white. The large cranberry fly-side field is charged with a white Mayflower containing a gold five-pointed star.
The sixth state
The six stripes at the hoist signify Massachusetts as the sixth state to ratify the Constitution.
Geography and colors
The stripes use the official state colors to map the Commonwealth from west to east, with green representing the Berkshires, cranberry symbolizing the Central Highlands, and blue representing the Atlantic coast.
The Mayflower
The white flower is the Mayflower, Massachusetts's state flower, while the gold star at its center signifies Massachusetts's role as a leader among the original colonies.
