Current Louisiana flag
Louisiana's current flag uses a generic symbol on a blue field. The pelican is specific to Louisiana, but the overall design is still dominated by a central emblem rather than functioning as a distinctive flag.
Design and symbolism
As with many Louisiana redesigns, I couldn't not go with the "pelican-de-lys". I drew my own version, the pelican affronty instead of the "standard" one with the beak carved out of one side of the centre petal.
The Pelican-de-lys
The pelican-de-lys combines Louisiana's state bird with the fleur-de-lys, creating a distinctly Louisiana symbol with the three drops implying the vulning motif.
The French connection
The fleur-de-lys represents Louisiana's French heritage and history.
Louisiana's colors
The gold-blue-gold field with a white pelican is a more broadly Louisiana palette than the purple, gold, and green associated with Mardi Gras.
