Current Kentucky flag
Kentucky's current flag is another seal-on-a-bedsheet design, although the goldenrod surrounding the seal at least gives it some visual distinction.
Design and symbolism
My redesign uses a blue-green field with three gold stars and four white bands running across the flag.
The Bluegrass State
The blue-green field represents Kentucky as the Bluegrass State, with its color evoking the distinctive bluegrass landscape.
Three stars
The three gold stars represent the three main regions of the Commonwealth. Their five points also represent Kentucky's admission to the Union as the 15th state. Their gold color nods to the goldenrod, Kentucky's state flower.
The rails
The four white bands have two meanings. Their parallel lines evoke the rails of a thoroughbred racetrack, celebrating the Kentucky Derby without relying on imagery of a horse. They also represent Kentucky's history as a Border Commonwealth, with the upper bands representing its Northern ties and the lower bands its Southern heritage.
