Current Idaho flag
Idaho's current flag is another boring seal-on-a-bedsheet design. The detailed seal and name tag make for a cluttered flag with little identity.
Design and symbolism
My redesign uses Idaho's unofficial state colors as the basis for a simpler design. A yellow field features red, white, and green chevrons pointing forward, with a six-pointed star made from six red diamonds at the fly.
The Star Garnet
The red gem-shaped star represents the star garnet, Idaho's state gem. Found only in Idaho and India, this rare gemstone is the source of the state's nickname, "the Gem State."
Colors
The yellow field, red and green chevrons, and red gem use the state's traditional colors. Green represents the landscape, yellow represents mining, and red represents the star garnet.
Chevrons
The chevrons represent progress, driving the state forward. They also reflect Idaho's mountains and the Snake River Valley.
