Current Iowa flag
Iowa's current flag relies almost entirely on generic federal symbolism. Red, white, and blue and an eagle could apply to almost any state, which probably explains the need for the name tag.
Design and symbolism
My redesign is a strong departure from the generic federal design. The two light blue stripes frame a black central field, with a series of yellow concentric circles forming an abstract corn cob.
Geographic colors
The blue stripes represent the Mississippi, Missouri, and Big Sioux Rivers, which form much of Iowa's eastern and western borders, while the black represents the fertile Iowa soil.
Corn
The yellow concentric circles form an abstract corn cob, representing Iowa's agricultural identity.
The 29th state
The 29 circles in the corn also represent Iowa's admission to the Union as the 29th state.
