Current Delaware flag
Delaware's current flag is essentially a seal on a bedsheet, with the diamond providing its only real visual element. The crowded seal and accompanying date make for a cluttered design.
Design and symbolism
My design replaces the state seal with a three-peaked zigzag band in the center of the flag. The existing buff and colonial blue palette is retained, while the text and seal are removed.
De La Warr
The zigzag band is taken from the coat of arms of Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, creating a direct visual link to Delaware's namesake and the West family lineage.
The Three Counties
The three peaks represent Delaware's three counties.
The Landscape
The jagged silhouette references the topography of the Delaware River and the Atlantic coastline. The position of the colors evokes the beaches and coast.
I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands throughout Australia on which these federal divisions are drawn and pay my respects to their Elders, past and present.
