Tasmsnian flag redesign

Design and symbolism

The Tasmanian redesign takes the state’s official sporting colours of maroon, yellow, and green. The red or maroon pale holds the yellow Southern Cross, while the green fly serves as a vibrant field for the state's most iconic emblem This combination aligns Tasmania’s civic identity with its well-established sporting and natural heritage.

Sporting tradition

The colours maroon, yellow and green, represent the official sporting colours of Tasmanian state teams, as well as being deeply ingrained in the identity in the state’s public consciousness.

Thylacine

A golden Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine, is featured in the fly. The design uses the green field as negative space to create the animal's distinctive stripes, celebrating Tasmania's unique natural history.

Pride of place

The points on the stars of the Southern Cross grow as the eye moves down, acknowledging the southern location of Tasmania in Australia, and the world.

Vice-regal standard

Governor standard

The vice-regal standard for the Governor of Tasmania swaps to a white pale with red stars, maintaining the green fly. This utilises the heraldic colours of white/silver and red as the base for the hoist. The Tasmanian blue gum is positioned within a white disc.
