Queensland flag redesign

← Back to overview Queensland state flag

Design and symbolism

The Queensland redesign incorporates the state’s iconic maroon and gold palette, utilizing the Australian pale to anchor the Southern Cross. The use of a yellow fly ensures a high-visibility contrast, while the specific star geometry and traditional badge maintain a clear link to Queensland’s established heraldic and sporting identity.

Maroon and gold

Maroon is the official state color, paired here with the yellow-gold traditionally associated with Queensland's sun and resources. The combination is frequently seen together, particularly in the state's sporting teams.

The state badge

The light blue Maltese Cross is retained from the existing state badge, now featuring an updated Tudor crown to reflect modern stylistic preferences and the enduring nature of the monarchy.

Unique Southern Cross

The Southern Cross is rendered with a bold display of stars of 7 and 8 points, deliberately omitting 6-pointed stars to represent the sheer vastness of the state's territory.

Vice-regal standard

Governor of Queensland standard

The vice-regal standard for the Governor of Queensland reverses the state colors, featuring a yellow pale with maroon stars and a maroon fly. This design is unique among the states as the maroon replaces the green (Vert) found in the heraldic colours of the state coat of arms. Choosing the modern state colors over outdated heraldic color pairings keeps the flag feeling contemporary. The state floral emblem, the Cooktown Orchid, is positioned within a yellow disc.
