Northern Territory flag redesign

Design and symbolism

Northern Territory redesign maintains the iconic ochre, black, and white palette of the current territory flag. The black Australian pale and ochre fly are preserved, along with the central floral emblem, ensuring the most recognised territorial flag in Australia remains largely unchanged while a small change is made to the number of points on one star, creating a new unique Southern Cross for the territory, while conforming to the new unified national system.

Red earth

The colours, especially ochre, are synonymous with the Northern Territory, representing the red earth, the night sky, and the long continuous history of the region.

The desert rose

The Territory's floral emblem is retained in the centre of the fly, featuring seven white petals and a black centre, symbolising the people and the growth of the territory.

Ancient lands

The Southern Cross is a symbol of the everlasting presence on these lands. Changing the bottom star to seven points distinguishes it from the Victorian-style on the previous flag, and creates the connection to the nation.
