New South Wales flag redesign

Design and symbolism

The redesign for New South Wales integrates the unofficial state colour of sky blue and the state floral emblem with the Australian pale. By utilising the specific sky blue associated with NSW heritage and the distinctive Waratah, the flag becomes instantly recognisable while adhering to the unified national system.

The Blues

The field uses the traditional sky blue of New South Wales, representing the state's identity and its long-standing sporting traditions.

The 'tah

The state's floral emblem, the waratah serves as a bold central badge, representing the unique flora and resilient character of the state. This version is specifically drawn to be distinct from the corporate government logo.

Inclusive

New South Wales uses a version of the Southern Cross with 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 points representing diversity and inclusion of everyone. NSW as the largest state by population, is one of only two states to make use of a 9 point star.

This design is similar to many other designs, however I believe the first to promote this design was Brendan Jones. My design uses my own illustration of the waratah, and alters the points on the stars.

Vice-regal standard

Governor standard

The vice-regal standard for the Governor of New South Wales features the Australian pale in white and blue, the heraldic colours of the state, with the waratah distinguished from the state flag on a white disc.
