Australian ensigns redesign
Design and symbolism
The Australian ensign system is updated to maintain consistency with the new national design. By replacing the Union Jack with the double triangle hoist, these flags remain clearly Australian while serving their specific ceremonial and functional roles.
Marine ensigns
Naval ensign
The Australian White Ensign, used by the Royal Australian Navy. It features a white field with blue stars, blue hoist and distinct red V.
Civil ensign
Also known as the merchant flag, this version uses the traditional red field for use by civilian vessels registered in Australia.
Aviation ensigns
Air Force ensign
The Royal Australian Air Force ensign uses a light blue field and incorporates the RAAF roundel in the fly and tilted Sourther Cross, maintaining its distinctive service identity.
Civil aviation ensign
Used by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and within the aviation industry, featuring the rotated Southern Cross over the dark blue cross on a light blue field. The cross is shifted slightly to better frame the Southern Cross.
Border Force ensign
The Australian Border Force replaces their standard Australian flag defaced with the words "BORDER FORCE" with an integrated ensign that forms part of the Australian system. Using the Air Force Blue references the fact the vast majority of border entries to Australia occur by air.
