Australian Capital Territory flag redesign
← Back to overviewDesign and symbolism
The redesign for the Australian Capital Territory uses the established territory flag design and palette of royal blue and gold. The Australian pale holds the Southern Cross, maintaining a direct visual link to the national flag, while the fly now features a simplified floral emblem to represent the territory's identity as the bush capital.
This design is virtually the same as the preferred design of Ivo Ostyn, the designer of the original ACT flag. I have drawn my own illustration of the Royal Bluebell in this version of the flag.
Colours
The royal blue, gold and white are taken from the existing territory flag, representing the city of Canberra and the surrounding region.
The royal bluebell
The floral emblem of the ACT replaces the complex modified Canberra coat of arms. It is rendered in royal blue and white, providing a modern and more appropriate symbol for the territory.
Australia's Southern Cross
The stars on the Southern Cross have seven points, mirroring the national flag. This signifies the ACT’s role as the seat of the Commonwealth government.
