About AuRORa

AuRORa — Australian Rapid Overland Rail — is a fantasy national rail network designed as a thought experiment: what would a serious, continent-spanning high-speed rail system look like if Australia chose to build one? The project began simply enough, with a question about how a Sydney–Melbourne HSR corridor might work — which stations, what alignment, what journey time. That single line became two, then five, then ten, and the network grew until it covered every state and territory capital and a substantial number of regional centres besides.

The design follows real infrastructure logic as closely as a fantasy project can. Lines are classified by the technology they'd realistically require: dedicated high-speed rail on high-demand corridors like the Sydney–Melbourne and Queensland coast routes, upgraded conventional alignments where low population density makes full HSR difficult to justify, and hybrid approaches where HSR makes sense for part of a route before handing off to improved existing track. Interchange stations are treated seriously: the network is designed so that every capital city is reachable from every other with at most one change. The Territory and Nullarbor lines — following the Ghan and Indian Pacific corridors respectively — are a case apart. Upgraded track, signalling, and new rolling stock would reduce journey times meaningfully without eliminating what makes those routes iconic. A Darwin–Adelaide crossing or a transcontinental run to Perth would still be a multi-night journey, still the kind of trip you take for the journey itself — just faster, more comfortable, and more reliably on time.

The Inland Line has a particular logic to it. It started as an attempt to connect regional Victorian cities — Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton — that sit off the main Melbourne–Sydney axis. Extended north through Albury and Wagga Wagga, it became clear it was tracing something close to the real Inland Rail freight project's corridor. Rather than fight that alignment, the line follows it, continuing through Dubbo, Tamworth and Armidale before turning northeast to Toowoomba — giving inland New South Wales and Queensland a direct rail spine that bypasses the congested coastal route entirely.
